Subject: Roots blower rotary valve air-lock bulk material feeder
Roots Blower Rotary Valve Air-Lock Bulk Material Feed Injector.
The purpose of this unit is to feed bulk material such as wood chips into a presurized air transport pipe. This unit has chambers around a circular center shaft. The upper chamber fills with material. When it gets to the bottom position, it drops the material into the tube with air flowing through at the bottom and the material is transported away. The whole point is that the feed hopper is isolated from the pressurized air in the tube by the rotating lip seals, other wise the material would just get blown back up into the feed hopper.
We think this unit was used with a 50 hp roots type blower (listed separately) to transport sawdust or wood chips. The motor that rotates this unit is 5 hp.
There is a Dodge type gear reducer to bring the motor speed down to the slow speed needed for the airlock valve rotation
This unit was made by Carothers Company.
The images above adn below are looking down into the top of the valve. The valve blade walls are at an angle so that the chambers open and close gradually rather than all at once.
The outer opening at the top is about 13 by 13 inches. This tapers out to about 25 by 25 inches just above the valve assembly.
The valve cylinder is about 22 inches in diameter.
One of the bottom ports is about 6 inch diameter and the other is about 8".
This is the label for the electric motor that rotates the valve.
